Nelson J was the second child born to Nelson Nehemiah Leach and Maria Crandall Leach. There is a lot of discrepancy on his actually year of birth. Many records say he was born in 1832, a few say 1835 and some say 1838. He married Alice Ann Hood on 19 Jun 1864. The couple had eight children, namely, William C "Will", Nelson N, Amelia, James Franklin, Ida Mae, Walter, Chauncey and Albert.

NELSON J LEACH OBITUARY:
Nelson Leach was born May 6, 1832, in Ontario, Canada, and came to Michigan at the age of sixteen and has lived in the state since that time. He wa married to Miss Alice Hood in 1857. A family of seven children grew to maturity and lived to mourn his loss. He departed this life at Kalkaska, this state, Sunday morning, February 15, 1914, aged 81 years, 9 months, and 9 days, realizing he was about to go and expressed a willingness to do so, showing no fear. We thank our many friends for their kindly assistance during the death of our father.
The children present were W. M. Leach, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Leach, J. F. Leach, Mr. and Mrs. Will Unger, and Mrs. Ida Dow. Twelve grandchildren were also present. The children absent were Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Leach and Mr. and Mrs. Chancie Leach and ten grandchildren, also Mrs. W. M. Leach.
