The son of Joseph & Nancy (Mahon) Breckenridge, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Lurgan Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, December 16, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg December 20 as a private with Co. H, 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry (70th Pa). He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer, date and place unknown, transferred to Co. I July 27, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company December 16, 1865.

He married Elizabeth lnu. but her status is unknown. He married Melinda C. Zellers in 1868 and fathered William Watson (b. 12/05/71), Zenia or Zena (b. 03/07/77) - married Nelson Lerch), and Nora (b. @1879). He lived the last part of his life in Dauphin County where he worked as a merchant and where he died from "catarrhal pneumonia" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
