Florence was born on April 12, 1898, the fifth child of Jackson C. and Laura (Wright) Harville. In October of that year, her mother died and Florence was cared for by her maternal grandmother, Frances Wright, who lived on the neighboring farm. While her father married again on May 24,1900, Florence continued living next door with her grandmother for many years.
In 1914, Florence married Daniel Matthews and together they had five children. Florence lived to be four months shy of 101 and was an active member of her church and senior citizen groups. She outlived three husbands and three of her children.
