According to legend he was trapped in the Shanghai church on May 8, 1868 that was destroyed by a tornado. He was spared while others who fled the building died. He was naturalized citizen on July 23,1892 in Galesburg, IL

He died on 1 May 1930 in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois, United States at the age of 82 and was buried in Hope Cemetery, Alexis Junction, Warren, Illinois, United States.
