Solomon was the second son born to Leandus Elmington Melson and Rosina Mautz Melson. Solomon never married. He lost a leg when he was young and didn't feel he coulld raise a family. He stuck a pitch fork in his leg and gangrene set up and they had to amputate his leg. He was a brother to Walter Douglas, Lucy Mitchell, Lottie Mildred and Etta Elmore Melson.
