Ellet was the son of Zaccheus and Lucy Martin Aller from New York or Pennsylvania. He was a farmer in Weston Township and married first Cora Hunt and after her death in 1920, he married Alice D. Mercer on 31 August 1922 in Wood County. He was the step-son of Daniel Mercer whom his mother married following Zaccheus's death. He had siblings Amos, Henry, and Rebecca Aller and step-siblings Eugene, Ruth, Cyrenus, Flora and Florence (twins), Leonidas, and Robert Mercer. Ellet died from angina pectoris at the age of 73 years 5 months and 19 days.
