Posthumous Medal of Honor recipient. Eric was born October 3, 1919 in Nysund, Sweden, son of Mr. & Mrs. Erland Gibson. He was killed in action January 28, 1944, aged 24 years, 3 months and 25 days, while serving with the Army near Isola Bella, Italy during World War II. During that action Eric destroyed four enemy positions, killed five and captured two German soldiers before being fatally wounded. For this action he was recommended for the Medal of Honor which was presented to his parents on Sept. 15, 1944 at a military ceremony at Camp McCoy near LaCrosse, Wisconsin. After the war, Eric's remains were returned to the United States and on Dec. 1, 1948 were interred in Nora Cemetery, Rice Lake, Wisconsin. Eric enlisted while a resident of Chicago and during the war his parents moved to a farm on Highway 48 near Rice Lake.
