From California. Wife of Charles Steinmetz. Died at the age of 59 years, 4 months, 1 day, of cancer of the stomach.

Mary Jane Williams was the fourth child born to Candace Shields Williams and William Henry Williams. The young couple had filed and established land in Philo (Anderson Valley) along with Candace's father, James Shields. Ghe Shields were related to the Grigsby, Edington, Crowey early settled in the Napa Valley and part of the Bear Flag Revolt. Candace Shields had been about 9 years old when her parents made the wagon train trip (1849) and joined family members in Napa Valley.
Mary Janes's father died the same year she was born. Her mother married a nearby neighbor's brother, Joseph Gschwend.
Mary Jane's new Gschwend moved to Little Sur area in Monterey after the Gschwend Mill burn in Philo. Gschwend built the first coast road thru his land from Bixby to Big Sur, which in the early years was the old road on the coast.
In 1890 Mary Jane married Charles A Steinmetz in Monterey.
By 1900, the couple were listed in the Sacramento census.They lived and owned the large home at 1118 7th Street, Sacramento. After Charles died, Mary Jane ran a boarding house at the resident.
After her stepfather died, she brought her mother from the Monterey area to live her last years with her.She died a few years after her mother. Only the "Williams" siblings lived. All of her six Gschwend half siblings died at Little Sur of TB before their teen years.Only her sister Anne Williams Bourges Crechriou life events and offsprings are known. James and Rosa are lost in time at the present.
