Born to James Shields and Ruth Ann Eddington Shields in Mo. Came west with parent on a wagon train in 1849. Father settled in Anderson Valley. Aunt was Capt John Grisby's wife. First husband was William Henry Williams,(married 1857) who died young in Anderson Valley. She married Joseph Gschwend,(1864)( a neighbor at the time) in Anderson Valley. They migrated to the Little Sur area about 1870 after Joseph's brother's mill burned in the anderson area.
She had 4 Williams children, James, Annie, Rosa and Mary Jane Williams. Her six Gschwend childred all died at Little Sur of TB by 1900.
She died in Sacramento living with her daughter Mary Jane Williams Steinmetz. Her daughter Annie Williams Bourges Crechriou is buried at Gazelle Cemetery, Ca.buried with her husband in a unmarked grave.
