Robert Lee "Bob" Christian, 81, Atchison, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at his residence.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Bertrand LaNoue, OSB, as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Louis Church Cemetery at Good Intent, west of Atchison. A parish wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, May 23, in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Joseph Church, Mt. St. Scholastica or St. Benedict's Abbey and may be left in care of the funeral home.

Bob was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Atchison, the son of Robert and Rose Dorgan Christian. He attended Float Elementary School south of Atchison, graduating from Atchison High School in 1944.

He and the former Mary Ellen Gormley were united in marriage on Sept. 24, 1947, at St. Louis Church in the Good Intent Community west of Atchison.

Bob was the "Rainbow Bread Man" for Atchison and surrounding communities, serving with the Rainbow Bread Company until he was eligible for retirement at an early age. He then became employed with the Unified School District 409 as a custodian and part-time bus driver until his full retirement age.

Bob served his country with the United States Navy from Nov. 21, 1944 until his honorable discharge on June 27, 1946.

He was a member of St. Joseph Church and a 50-year member of the Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post No. 6 of the American Legion, Atchison.

In his spare time, Bob enjoyed assisting with the duties on his family farm as well as expanding his knowledge and talents with woodworking, making numerous shelves and cabinetry for his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Christian, Atchison; three daughters, Diane Henderson, Atchison, Sharon Radetic, Lenexa, and Julie Ellerman, Atchison; a son, Daniel Christian, Kansas City; two sisters, Rose Ella Shaver, Paolo, and Mary May Weber, Atchison; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a grandchild, Megan Rebecca Henderson, and a sister, Marjorie Bonnel.
