Esther Wilder Richardson was born 1816 in Wake County, NC, the 7th of 8 known surviving children (2 boys/6 girls) born to planter Col. Hillory Madison Wilder and his wife, Esther Avera.

She was the paternal grandchild of Samuel Wilder (ca. 1730-1815) and Frances "Fanny" Ervin of Franklin Co, NC and gr-grandchild William Wilder (ca. 1710-1784) and Elizabeth Culpepper of Virginia who removed to Franklin Co, NC. She is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Edward Wilder (ca. 1614-1687) of Combe, Hants, England who settled in the Lower Norfolk Region of Virginia ca. 1650. On her mother's side she was the maternal grandchild of Jacob Avera and Anne Faile/Fail of Johnston Co, NC.

Ester, who's name has also been found as Easter, married William Rice Richards of Johnston County in about 1834 when she was about 18 years old, and he 20. William, whose family had removed to Greene Co, Al in the 1820's, would settle his bride there as well. Ester's sister, Mary "Polly" Wilder, who married Willie L. Hinton of Johnston County, had also removed to Greene Co, AL after her marriage.

Esther and William would become parents to 7 known surviving children, two of whom died young.

* William Hillory Richardson (1835-1880)
* Almeth Richardson (1837-1842)
* John (Jehu) R. Richardson (1841-1902)
* Sarah "Sally" Esther Richardson (1816-1854)
* Joseph Hopkins Richardson, CSA (1845-1900)
* Madison Richardson (1850-1907)
* John Richardson (1853-1854)

William was widowed in 1854 when Esther died at age 37. He survived her less than 3 years, passing in 1857 at age 43.

All four of their surviving sons would serve with the Confederacy and survive the war. At war's end, Joseph and Madison Richardson would remove Brownsville, Hinds County.
