William Rice Richardson was born 1814 in Johnston County, North Carolina, the 8th of 10 known surviving children (4 boys/6 girls) born to farmer William Richardson Jr. (1775-1842) and his wife, Elizabeth Rice (1777-1821).

He was the paternal grandson of William Richardson Sr. (1733-1814) and Mildred Robertson of Johnston County, NC; and gr-grandson of John Richardson (1712-1801) and wife Hannah of Virginia who removed to Johnston Co., NC in the early 1700's. He is a direct descendant of an early ancestor, John Richardson (ca. 1620) of Virginia.

William was about six year old when his father, William Richardson Sr., and his uncle, Allen Richardson (ca. 1780-1845) both removed with their families to Greene County, AL.

In about 1834, William married Esther Ann Wilder, daughter of Hillory Madison Wilder of Wake County. He was about 20 at the nuptials, and she about 18. The set up farming in Greene County, AL where they would become parents to 7 known surviving children, two of whom died young.

William was widowed in 1854 when Esther died at age 37. He survived her less than 3 years, passing in 1857 at age 43.

All four of their surviving sons would serve with the Confederacy and survive the war. At war's end, Joseph and Madison Richardson would remove Brownsville, Hinds County.
