S. A. Matthews Taken by Death
Well-known Resident of Tifton died Sunday Morning. Funeral Monday Afternoon
Silas Alonzo Matthews, eighty-one years old, died Sunday morning at eight o'clock at his residence here, after four months illness.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist church at four o'clock, conducted by Dr. F. O. Mixon and Rev. D. C. Rainey, with interment following in the Tifton cemetery. The Masons will have charge of the services at the grave.
Mr. Matthews was born in Cherokee County, October 10, 1856, a son of J. A. and Lettice Jarvis Matthews. He came to Tifton in 1910 and had been engaged in different lines of business here since. He was a devoted member of the Baptist church, a noble Christian gentleman, and a man held in the highest esteem by a wide circle of friends, who join in extending sympathy to the family. He was a devoted husband and father, a true friend and a man of many estimable traits of character, and a member of the Masonic lodge.
He is survived by his wife, to whom he had been married for sixty-one years, and the following children: A. J., C. A., T. H. and R. C. Matthews, of Tifton, Rev. Louis B. Matthews of Jackson, Tenn.: Mrs. J. W. Rogers, Atlanta, Mrs. C. F. Boles, Calhoun, Mrs. J. C. Randolph, Mrs. A. L. Dooly, Mrs. E. P. Doss, Miss Gladys Matthews, of Tifton. One daughter died in 1902. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Sam Matthews, Tulsa, Okla, Joe Matthews, Mrs. J. J. Boston and Mrs. Jim Layton, Cartersville, Mrs. Earl Boston and Mrs. Zack Reeves, Calhoun, Mrs Fred Williams, Akron, Ohio.
