Anna was the second and last child born to Robert C Cathey and his wife Sarah E "Sallie" Noland*. Sometime in 1853 or early 1854, her father died. By September 1854, however, her mother remarried, and Anna along with her older brother George Henry were brought up in the household of their step-father Madison Chapman. The siblings appear, mistakenly listed under the Chapman name, on the 1860 Census (Pg 381; Family 983) in Blue Township, Jackson County, Missouri, and on the 1870 Census (Pg 27-B; Family 86) in Sni-a-bar, also in Jackson County. However, Anna, just 17 years old, also appears with her new husband Joseph Connelly on the 1870 Census (Pg 196-A; Family 68) in Blue Township, six days after the Chapman census record, on August 26th. Joseph, who at 32 was 14 years Anna's senior and a veteran of the Civil War, was listed as a laborer, probably working on nearby farms.

By the 1880 Census (ED 31: Pg 156-B), the family was settled into farmlife in Blue Springs, and Anna was the mother of two young children, Ida age 6 and Mary just 11 months. She and Joseph had 4 more children before the 1900 Census (ED 135; Pg 3-A), which found them in Prairie Township still struggling to make a living working on local farms. Ida, by this time 26, was employed as a schoolteacher and no doubt helped to support the family until her marriage in 1901. Son William, age 16, also worked farms to help the family.

The family soon moved to Kansas City, a center of ragtime music and mob-controlled politics, probably in search of a better life than what they had experienced in the farmlands. Joseph was already in his 60s and no longer had the stamina for farm work, and Anna was approaching 50. City life, however, was not to prove less difficult than farming.

Metropolitan areas around the turn of the century were magnets for many people, and with the increased population and lack of sanitation as well as limited medical knowledge, cities often became hotbeds of disease. In 1904, Anna's daughter Mary died of consumption, known today as tuberculosis. Mary's death record shows that the family was already living in Kansas City, on Harrison Street.

In 1908, daughter Ida, who was settled near Independence, died, leaving behind a husband and three small children. By 1910, the family was living on Locust Street in Kansas City (ED 119; Pg 12-B), and Anna had two children at home: 15-year-old Anna (Jr.) and 20-year-old Joseph Henry. Joseph (Sr.), then 73, was working at odd jobs. Joseph (Jr.) was a teamster for a transfer company, and Anna (Jr.) contributed to the household by working as a stock girl in a garment factory.

Within a year from the census, Anna contracted tuberculosis, and after spending over a month in the hospital, died at age 57. Her daugher Anna would eventually contract the disease as well, succumbing only seven years after her mother. Joseph survived his wife by 18 years.

* Anna's parentage is stated on her death certificate for which her son Fred was the informant. Also, her brother Henry, with his family, appears under the surname of Cathey on the 1850 Census with their parents and later on the 1880 Census in MO and numerous census records (state and federal) in Kansas.
