Ida was the oldest of Joseph and Anna (Cathey) Connelly's six children. Her paternal grandfather, Dr. Henry Connelly, had married a native of Jesus Maria, Chihuahua, Mexico, and Ida inherited the complexion of her Hispanic grandmother.

She grew up on a farm, appearing on the 1880 Census with her parents and sister Mary in Blue Springs, Jackson County, Missouri (ED 31: Pg 156-B) and on the 1900 Census with the family in Prairie Township in Jackson County (Ed 135; Pg 3-A). By 1900, Ida was teaching school, but she gave up teaching after she married. She was 27 years old when she married William Monroe Cross on 27 November 1901 in Indepence, Jackson County.

She and William had four children, three of whom lived to adulthood, but she succumbed to illness and died at the young age of 34.
