DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER.

Decorah (sic) Hadley Lewis, daughter of Jonathan and Rachel Doane, was born 1st month, 10th day, 1811, in Blount county, Tennessee, then removed with her parents to Orange county, Indiana in 1816 and afterwards to Morgan county where she was united in marriage with Elias Hadley the 11th month and the 15th day of 1832. There were born to them eleven children five of whom died in infancy. The family moved to Iowa in 1855 and settled in Guthrie county, being among the early pioneer settlers of the immediate vicinity. She was left a widow by the death of her husband 8th month and 6th day in 1860. She was remarried in 1867 to Samuel Lewis after which time she resided near Redfield till left a widow again in '78 since which time she has made her home with her children until her death on the 28th of the 10th month 1896 at the age of 85 years 9 months and 18 days. She was unusually patient the last few months of her life. Those who had the care of her often wondered at her child like simplicity in manner and conversation, often repeated various portions of scripture. Her mind was wonderfully strong to the last and her memory was such that the grandchildren often went to her for facts and dates. Although she suffered extremely the last few days of her life she passed away peacefully and quietly. She was a life long member of the Friends church and was permitted to drink deep from the wells off Salvation and to hear the heavenly music as the angels came to bear her over to the other side. She has had fifty-three grandchildren and forty-four great-grandchildren most of whom with all her children that are living were present at the funeral service held at the Friends church on Friday, October, at 2 p.m. Service by the pastor from the text, "Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age as a shock of corn cometh in in his season fully ripe." Job 5-26.
