KING, NC ~ Mary Elizabeth Slate Baker, 93, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at Village Care in King. She was born June 28, 1906, in Stokes County to Joseph L. and Edna Tuttle Slate. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nannie Slate and Mabel Lawson. She was married June 4, 1924, to Henry Ralph Baker who preceded her in death in 1976. To this union was born four children. A son, Philmore, died in 1980. Their three surviving children, a son, Rex L. Baker and wife Helen; and two daughters, Becky Craig and husband Duke, all of King and Carolyn Mabe and husband Lloyd of Germanton. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Lowell and David Baker, Kathie Bowman, Rhonda Craig and Jennifer and Carrie Mabe; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mary was the oldest living member of Mountain View Baptist Church where she attended as long as her health permitted. She taught Sunday school for 50 years and was very active in missions. For years, her ministry was sending birthday cards to everyone she knew. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Mountain View Baptist Church. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at Mountain View Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Saul officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1569, King, NC 27021 or to Village Care of King, Residence Council, P.O. Box 1750, King, NC 27021. The family would like to thank all of the staff of Village Care, especially the 400 hall, for their love and kindness to Mama during the past 14 months.
