He was a faithful member of Mount Washington Covenant Church until it closed. He then joined Thompson Settlement Baptist Church.
He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1976. He was a retired farmer and horseman. He and his late brother, L.C. Fields , owned and operated Mountain View Farm for more than 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marian Fields ; his parents, Carter and Nannie Jarnagin Fields ; a son, Ralph Fields ; a daughter-in-law, Lillie Fields ; a son-in-law, Jim Seale; four brothers; and six sisters.

He is survived by one daughter, Carol Seale of Jonesville, Va.; four sons, Thomas Fields of Jonesville, Va., Norman Fields and wife, Maudie of Jonesville, Va., Eugene Fields and wife, Betsy of Grafton, Mass., and Jonesville, Va., and Rondall Fields and wife, Becky of Hanover, Va.; 15 grandchildren, Harold Fields , Greg Fields , Billy Fields , Chris Fields , Daniel Fields , Crystal Ketron, Tina Carnes, Michael Fields , Pamela Dunne, Jennifer Fields , Ben Sadler, Jr., Rachel Smith, Marianne Arney, Kari Fields , and Erin Fields ; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pansy Shuck of Longwood, Fla.; one brother, Rev. Charles Fields of Anderson, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville, Va.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jim Hubbard and Pastor David Jones officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, Va.
Those wishing to attend the graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday to proceed to the cemetery.
