Mrs. L. W. Holmes
Matilda Persons was born Nov 12th, 1821, in the state of New York, and died at the home of her son, R. P. Holmes in the town of Big Flats, on Oct 18th, 1914, aged 92 years, 11mo., and 12 days.
On January 17th, 1844 she was united in marriage to Luther W. Holmes, and in 1850, they came to Wisconsin to reside, settling on a farm on the northern bank of the Roche -a -Cri Creek in the town of Big Flats. Their farm was on the main traveled road at that time between Portage and Grand Rapids, and was a favorite stopping place for travelers.
Probably no early settlers of the county enjoyed wider acquaintance, or were better known and higher esteemed than Mr. and Mrs. Holmes. Their home was one of open hospitality. Thier lives of Christian charitableness, and humble endeavor, endeared them to all.
Mr. Holmes died in 1893, since which time she has made her home with an only son R. P. Holmes.
Funeral services were held at the home Oct 20th, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. E. Day of this village and the remains were laid at rest in the Neibull cemetery.
