Army Cpl. Sotelo was assigned to Headquarters Troop, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Polk, Louisiana in a fire support platoon. Sotelo was patrolling Baghdad in a Humvee when a rocket propelled grenade struck his convoy. Tomas hurried to achieve his dream by enlisting in the Army after earning his diploma. He was like a big brother to the other soldiers. When other soldiers would come to the unit, he would help teach them what they should do and what they shouldn't do to stay out of trouble. He was a driver who was put in a leadership position as corporal because of his excellence. When things were tough, he'd say, 'OK, guys, let's get up,' and he would crack a joke and everybody would start laughing. He was a motivator.
