Robert Neil Monaghan was born 2 October 1888, a son of James Monaghan and Martha S. "Mattie" Neil. As a young man, Robert apprenticed as a watchmaker and jeweler at Pearce Jewelry Co. in Gillespie, IL. For 24 years, he owned and operated Monaghan Jewelry on Main Street in Gillespie.
Robert Monaghan married Catherine "Kitty" Owens on 25 September 1912. They were the parents of four children: Robert Kenneth, Carl James, Marian Martha Margaret, and Ralph Howard.
