* this is my (Cara's) Mom's memorial page

Dorothy was the daughter of Ambrose David and Bertha Wilkerson.

She had 10 siblings, including a twin sister, Florence and they came to Ontario from Quebec in a Conestoga wagon when the twins were 2 or 3 years old.

She married William Clifford Hackett on Oct 7, 1953 in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

They had 3 biological children (Bill, Judy and Carole) and adopted foster child Cara-Mae in 1978, after fostering her since 1972.

She died of metastatic breast cancer.

Her service was held at Dreisinger Funeral Home in Elmira, Ontario on Nov. 4, 2004.

-----

My Mom was a bit harder to get to know.

She was more quiet and reserved than my extroverted father. But she was also less fluid with her opinions. Once she believed or felt or decided something, it tended to be "set in stone."

One of her greatest joys was found in the love and care of and for children, most especially of her grandchildren.

She also loved to draw and spoke to me a number of times of how she had wanted to continue in school to pursue art but instead was needed on the family farm.

As well, each of we 4 children, plus all the grandchildren who were born before Mom died (7) have a special tablecloth that was crocheted by hand by Mom over many, many hours.

Before Mom died, she was very clear on what she wanted in regards of her funeral.

#1 - Only our immediate family and her siblings were allowed to see her in the casket so we informed them to come early. Once anyone outside of those people came, the casket was to be closed.

#2 - No hymns. After Dad's funeral in 1993, Mom was very clear that she never wanted hymns, and especially not "Amazing Grace" so her funeral music was Alan Jackson's Greatest Hits and her coffin was taken out while her favourite song, "Livin' on Love" was played.

We will always miss her.

I also wrote my Mom's obituary:
