Mr. Dykes was born October 15, 1922 in Bleckley County to the late James S. and Josie Jones Mullis Dykes. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia Mathis Murrow, Mattie Purser, Lucille Roland Mullis and Jimmie Hoover and his brothers Dudley Dykes and Elvin Mullis.
Mr. Dykes graduated from Cochran High School in 1941, from Middle Georgia College in 1946 and from Georgia Southern College (Georgia Teacher College) in 1948. He earned a Masters Degree in PE form George Peabody College in Nashville, TN and graduated from Mercer University in 1953 with the School of Administration Certificate. He served 28 months in the United States Army during World War II serving in field artillery. He served 18 months overseas.
He was an avid sports player, playing and lettering in basketball and baseball while attending Cochran High School, Middle Georgia College, Mercer University and Georgia Southern College. He also played semi pro baseball.
He was a well known and highly respected educator, having taught and coached three years at Hawkinsville High and six years at Woodbury High School. He served as Principal of Cochran Elementary School for seven years before being elected to serve as Bleckley County School Superintendent from 1964-1980. He retired in 1980.
He was an active member, teacher and deacon of First Baptist Church for most of his adult life.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Aliene Lewis Dykes of Cochran; his daughter and son-in-law Janice and Darryl Butler of Martinez; his grandchildren, Dianna Paulus (Chris) and Brian Butler (Mary Ellen); his great grandchildren, Brooke Newsome, Rylan Butler and Trace Butler all of Martinez; his sister Ellen Dykes Cote and brother Abner Rawlins "Sonny" Dykes; several nieces and nephews.
The family is at 164 Ninth St. Terrace and will greet friends from 7 until 9 PM Wednesday at Mathis Funeral Home.
