Grace was born in the hamlet of Burras in the parish of Wendron, Cornwall, the sixth of nine children born to copper miner Wearne Dunstan (1786?-1844) and his wife Jane (Perry)(1785-1852). Her gravestone inscription states she was born in 1818, probably correctly. She was baptized at the Wendron parish church on 30 May 1819.

At the census of 1841 she was working as a servant on a farm at Penmennor in the parish of Stithians, 3 miles northeast of Burras. Penmennor was the home hamlet of miner Henry Martin, her future husband.

Grace and Henry married at the Wendron parish church on 23 Nov 1843. Henry signed his name to the register, Grace made a mark. The lead mining region of northwest Illinois was then an attraction to the opportunity-seeking young miners in Cornwall and Henry and Grace departed for the area soon after their marriage. They settled at East Fork in Jo Daviess county where their only child Elizabeth was born on 12 May 1847.

Grace died at East Fork on 14 Dec 1848. Henry went on to re-marry to Keturah Jenkin, the widow of a Cornish miner who failed to return from the California gold rush.
