Son of Shadrack S. "Shade" and Charlotte Lottie Marshall Nester

Mount Airy News from October 17, 1941 Front page.

Lewis Nester, 40, married with a family of six children, was instantly killed at a saw mill near Laurel Fork, Va on Thursday morning, October 9.

Nester was fireman of the main boiler which ran the mill and was getting up pressure to start the engine. For some unknown cause the boiler exploded with a terrific concussion before operation of the mill started for the day. Parts of the boiler were thrown more than 300 yards, although none of the other workmen were seriously hurt, as they were not close by at the time.

The flying parts of the boiler plate struck Nester as he stood close to the boiler.

It was an old boiler and it is thought too much steam pressure caused it to explode with terrific force.
