National Rubber Firm's Owner Is Taken

Charles Melvin Dunnavant, 60-year-old retired Charleston business man, died at 5 a.m. Friday in a local hospital after a year's illness. He had been a patient at the hospital since March 23. The body was removed to the Barlow mortuary.
Mr. Dunnavant, of 1127 Edgewood Drive, was owner and operator of the National Rubber and Leather Company at 18 West Washington Street for the last 20 years. He was actively engaged in business until illness forced him to retire about a year ago.
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Mr. Dunnavant was born April 27, 1878. He was the son of the late Mary Geschwindt and John M. Dunnavant of Richmond.
Mr. Dunnavant married Miss Clara Lee Lynch of Richmond on October 22, 1900, at Richmond. He and his wife moved to Charleston soon after their marriage. Mr. Dunnavant was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are five children, Mrs. O. B. Bates of Richmond, James Dunnavant of Detroit, Ralph Dunnavant, Paul Dunnavant and Leroy Dunnavant, all of Charleston; two sisters, Mrs. William Detrich of Richmond and Mrs. Joe Pervis of Philadelphia; and five brothers, George Dunnavant of Huntington, Earl Dunnavant of Columbia, South Carolina, Edward Dunnavant, Russell Dunnavant and Irvin Dunnavant, all of Richmond.
Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Barlow mortuary chapel with Rev. Wallace McPherson Alston, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
