On January 5, 1898, Bernard Ortmann was one of the eight children born to Theodore and Catherine (Wolke) Ortmann in Lastrup, Morrison County, Minnesota. He was named after his paternal grandfather, Bernard Ortmann.
Bernard Ortmann was ordained on June 24, 1929 at St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minn with the name, Fr. Cyrillus Ortmann, OSB. He was more commonly known as Fr. Cyril. Much of his parish service was done in St. Martin, Stearns County, Minn (1947-1962) where his parishioners loved and appreciated Fr. Ortmann very much, even years after his death.

Fr. Cyril Ortmann died at the age of 64 years in Stearns County, Minnesota on May 5, 1962. He is buried in the Row 2, Plot 8 of the Monastic Section South of St. Johns Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.
Fr. Cyril's uncle, Fr. Anselm Ortmann OSB, died in 1953 and is buried nearby in the same cemetery. Another uncle, Fr. Odilo Ortmann OSB; died in 1931 and is buried at Mount Angel, Oregon.
