Jonas immigrated to Central Montana in 1896. Two of his brothers would also come to the United States and settle in Montana: Andrew and Sverre. Jonas married Amalia (known as Amelia) Andersen-Ruteig at Lewistown, Montana on November 22, 1908. The young couple moved first to Dovetail, Montana where Amalia's sister Anette and husband Tom Iverson had settled. The couple had five children: Ole, Agnes, Jonas, Arnold, and Rebecca. About 1932, Jonas and his family would settle 16 miles southwest of Grass Range on the "Rowley Place" where he would raise cattle and alfalfa until he could no longer manage the place. His sons Jonas and Arnold took over the ranch when he could no longer operate it. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1944 and one son, Ole, in 1956.
