Elijah Stearns II was born in Dover, Windham, Vermont and was the son of Elijah Stearns I and Lucretia Johnson Stearns. Elijah Stearns I traveled to the newly opening Ohio territory and purchased 1000 acres in Olmsted, Cuyahoga, Ohio. The acreage was divided among the 6 sons of the Stearns family and the sons all moved from Vermont to Ohio. Elijah II and his brothers settled their farms and established their families along Butternut Ridge. Elijah married Welthy Usher. After she passed away, he married a second time to Hannah Mattison.
