Martha Magdalene Amaker Campbell, 69 of Lexington, SC, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was called to her heavenly home on August 1, 2011. She passed quietly and sweetly as her family celebrated her life and sang to her the church hymns that she loved so much. In death, she joins her beloved husband, Thomas Chester Campbell, Sr., loving parents, Sallie and Fred Amaker, and siblings, Fred Amaker, Jr., Edwin Amaker, and Mildred Amaker Black. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Thomas and Lisa Campbell of Lexington, SC, Keith and Julia Campbell Westover of Buford, Georgia, Tye and Lauralan Campbell of Lexington, SC, Toyeka Campbell of Lexington, SC and Levi and Kathy Campbell of Lexington, SC. She leaves behind siblings, Gladis Amaker Hallman of West Columbia, SC, Hilton Amaker of Orangeburg, SC, and Lavern Amaker of St. Petersburg, Florida. Her grandchildren who will forever hold her in their hearts and cherish "their" special times with grandma are James and Shannon Campbell Metts of Seaside, California, Maurine, Christina, Tiah and Reeves Westover, all of Buford, Georgia, Meilian, Tyla, Chatham, Bryeson, Pazlan and Rylan Campbell of Lexington, SC, Mahala, Levi, and McKayla Campbell of Lexington, SC, and great grandchildren, Holden, Madisyn and Chase Metts of Seaside, California. Martha was born on September 9, 1941 in Orangeburg County, SC to Sallie and Fred Amaker. She was one of seven children. She was a faithful and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She married Thomas Chester Campbell on January 2, 1957 in Dade City, Florida and was sealed to him for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple on September 19, 1966. They raised five children together until his sudden death on September 21, 1999. She continued on after his passing spending time with her children and grandchildren, doing genealogy work, traveling with family and friends, working as a certified water aerobics instructor and generally comforting those in need. She was a natural nurturer. In remembering her life, her sister Gladis declared that if she couldn't have her mother for reassurance in times of sadness or despair, "I wanted my Martha." Martha loved to learn. Through the years she attended Beaufort Technical College in Beaufort, SC, Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College in Orangeburg, SC, and Midlands Technical College in West Columbia, SC. She was also a very creative person. She was a gifted seamstress, cook, cake decorator and floral artist. She learned anything she could from others, but was very often self taught. She has left a wonderful legacy of her talents to many of her children and grandchildren by teaching them these skills through the years. She had many hobbies. Among them were fishing, swimming, camping, watching baseball, traveling, and any activity that was family related. We will miss our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, but we rejoice in knowing that she has been reunited with her eternal sweetheart and moved on to the next stage of her life. As a family, it is comforting to know that we can be together forever. So, this is not goodbye, it is only "until we meet again." Martha Amaker Campbell's memory will forever be present in our lives as we move forward in our own earthly tests, for she taught us faith, perseverance but most of all, she taught us love. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 12, 2011 from 6:30 – 8:30 and funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 13, at 10:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2224 Augusta Highway, Lexington, SC. Interment will follow at the Amaker, Harley, Jeffcoat Family Cemetery in North, SC. Pallbearers will be her grandson: James Metts, Chatham Campbell, Bryeson Campbell, Reeves Westover, Levi Campbell, and Rylan Campbell. Honorary Pallbearers: Jimmy Edwards, Richard Senecal, Spencer Freeman and Joseph Freeman. © 2011 Caughman-Harman Funeral Home
