A 21-YEAR-OLD Oklahoma City youth who during his Capitol Hill highschool days won letters for being an outstanding player in football, basketball, track and golf, has died of leukemia.
Donald Gene Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Reed, 3017 W. Eubanks, died Friday in the naval hospital in Corona, Calif., following a five weeks illness.
Reed, a navy seaman first class developed the illness while at sea. After he was returned to the hospital and his sickness was diagnosed, the youth made two requests.
He told his parents, who went to his bedside, that he "would like to be baptized and would like to go to college." The first wish he received. He was baptized in the physio-therapy pool at the Corona hospital by a Church of Christ minister. Death prevented the second wish from coming true.
Young Reed was active in Navy athletics, but during his last basketball game became extremely fatigued and almost collapsed. A check-up followed and he was hospitalized. Coincidently his brother, Sherman, 18, also in the navy, was taken to the same hospital, while his brother was there, for treatment of a broken arch.
Donald graduated from Capitol Hill highschool in 1952 where he was given letters in four sports, reportedly the first time a single student had lettered in so many sports in one year. After highschool he entered Central State college, Edmond, for three months before leaving to enlist in the navy.
While in the navy he was named to the all-star basketball team. While stationed in Texas he represented Corpus Christi station in a basketball tournment and was selected outstanding player.
Arrangements are pending at the Hunter funeral home here. The family has requested that no flowers be sent, but that any contributions be made to the Medical Research foundation.
Reed is survived by his parents of the Oklahoma City home; his brother Sherman, with the navy, and three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Zahner, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Dorothy Mead, Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Kay Joiner, of the home.
