MEL THOMPSON SUCCUMBS TO LENGHTHY ILLNESS

WELL LIKED LOCAL RESIDENT FOR 50 YEARS DIED FRIDAY AT HOME; RITES HELD MONDAY

Melvin Eugene Thompson, a prominent resident of Port Allegany for the last 50 years, died early Friday morning, March 3, 1950, at his home on Mill Street from complications of diseases.

He was born March 25, 1872 at Kersey, Pa., son of Eugene and Emma Moyer Thompson deceased. He married Miss Eliza Agens July 2, 1892 at Brocton, N. Y. He was engaged in lumbering, then operated stores in Ridgway and Clarmont before coming to Port Allegany in 1900 to accept a position with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was later employed at the Allegany Window Glass Factory here until he entered the garage business at the corner of Maple and Pearl streets. For the past 20 to 25 years he has operated school buses for the local schools. He was one term on the Port Allegany borough council. A man of sterling character, he was liked and respected by all who knew him.

He was a member of the Port Allegany Lodge, I. O. O. F., and Port Allegany Lodge, Loyal order of Moose.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Oral A. Thompson of Port Allegany, Mrs. D. A. Campbell of Lemoyne, PA., and Mrs. W. E. Finn Turtlepoint; six brothers Cecil and Ross of Ridgway. Winfield Thompson of Cass, W. VA., Ashley Thompson of Olean, Burr and Roy Thompson of Warren, O.; Three Sisters Mrs. C. R. Wickard [Rickard]of Ridgway, Mrs. Jennie [Jessie] Benson of Wappinger Falls, N. Y.; 11 grandchildren 6 great-grandchildren. One son Clyde M. Thompson, passed away January 9, 1936.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the residence, Rev. Earl B. Williams officiating in place of Rev. William Swales who was ill. Burial was made in Fairview Cemetery. Bearers were grandsons: Leewin Baker, Melvin Thompson, Charles Campbell, William Young, Karl Van D'Elden and Ernest Thompson.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mr. And Mrs. D. A. Campbell and Mrs. Jack Dart of Harrisburg; Mrs. Grace Thompson Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin C. Thompson, Barbara and Bruce of Erie, Pa; Mr. and Mrs. William G. Young and son Clyde of Rome, N. Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Leewin T. Baker and Sherry Lee from Raleigh, N. C.; Mr. and Mrs. Karl H. Van D'Elden, Bedford, O.; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Thompson, Mr. Lloyd Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Thompson, Mr. Donald Stockles, Mr. And Mrs. C. R. Rickard, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Rickard, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Agens and family, Mrs. Harry Agens, Miss Lois Agens, Mr. Waid Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Moyer, Mr. and Mrs. William Shaver, Ridgway, Pa.
