John Chidester enlisted in Battery G 2nd Illinois Light Artillery on 5 December 1861. At the time of his enlistment he was a farmer living in DeKalb, DeKalb County, Illinois. He gives his age as 22 which would put his year of birth as 1839 not 1835. There is currently no explanation for this conflicting information.
He served with Battery G until 15 March 1865 when he was transferred to the Veteran's Relief Corps.
In 1864, perhaps while on a veteran's furlough he married Nancy Lugenia Chase Patchen. His wife is the widow of PVT Walace Hiram Patchen who was killed at Gettysburg while serving with Company K 157th New York Infantry.
Following his service with Battery G and the Veteran's Relief Corps, Chidester returns to New York where he spends his remaining days as a farmer.
