Peter Zealand Goodwin was the son of Eli Goodwin and Eliza Mariah Snider. He grew up in Spencer County, Kentucky on his father's farm.

Around 1856, he and his brother George moved to Union County Kentucky, where he married America Kuykendall on Dec 21, 1858. They had four daughters, Mary Eliza, Lucy Bell, Georgia and Sally. Following America's death in 1868, he married Phoebe Robertson and they had 4 children, Florence, Fannie, Eli and James R.

Around 1870, Peter and his family, along with several other Goodwins, came to Labette County, Kansas to make their home. Following Phoebe's death in 1875, Peter married Margaret Gilmore on 24 Dec 1877. This marriage was apparently very brief and it is not known at this time what became of her. He married Rosa Beauchamp on 24 Feb 1878 in Cherokee County, Kansas and they had three children: one who died in infancy, Rosa Nell and Perry.

Peter was a farmer all of his life.
