Margaretha Hentges was born on May 13, 1839 in Wollmerath (Koblenz) in the Rhineland. In 1853, at age 13, she emigrated to the United States with her parents Johann Heinrich (John Henry) and Anna Elizabeth (nee Fuellenz) Hentges and her four siblings, J. Nicholas ("Nick"), Elizabeth, Christina, and Katherine. They eventually settled in St. Joe in Scott County, Minnesota.

Four years later, on January 29, 1857, she married Jacob Doetzel. It was said that Margaret and Jacob were married in the morning and in the afternoon they were hauling bricks (at 25 cents a load) to build the large house (having between eight and ten bedrooms) still standing today. The large house would be needed for the couple's eventual 17 children.

Juane noted in her family history the problem of origins: although all the obituaries of the Hentges family say that they were born in Wollmerath, other sources state that the Hentges family came from Immerath. Both villages were in the Rhineland.
