Jacob Doetzel was born in Limburg an der Lahn (Limburg on the Lahn River) in the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt on March 6, 1824. In 1853, at age 24, Jacob emigrated to the United States and settled in St. Joe in Scott County, Minnesota.

Four years later, on January 29, 1857, he married Margaretha (Margaret) Hentges. It was said that Margaret and Jacob were married in the morning and in the afternoon they were hauling bricks (at 25 cents a load) to build the large house (having between eight and ten bedrooms) still standing today. The large house would be needed for the couple's eventual 17 children.
