U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Union College, in 1822, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced to practice law in Newport, New York, in 1826. In 1833, he was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-third Congress and reelected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress, serving until 1837. After leaving Congress, he was commissioner of schools for Barre Township, New York, (1841-480 and served in the New York State Senate, (1841-48). He also was canal appraiser, (1849-50) and county judge and surrogate for Orleans County, (1856-60). He died in retirement at age 87.
