The cousins discussing the murder of Henderson in 2009:

Cousin Sarah Cornett-hagen [daughter of Reba Adams]: Henderson was from the first set of kids shot and killed by Grandma's [Sarah Lydia] brother, Bob Qualls. He and his son Glen, an accessory to the crime, went to prison for the ruthless killing over bootlegging. I knew Bob as an old man who walked the road to Pound and carried a whip. He had a lovely wife named Aunt Addie and she was always so kind to children. He was not.

Cousin Raymond Adams [son of Dick Adams]: Bob Qualls and Henderson Adams got in a gun fight in 1922. Henderson was a big man, over 6 feet I think and Bob was short, about 5'6 or so but he was mean. Henderson had made some comment about how Bob wouldn't work or something and Bob heard about it. So as the story goes Bob and his son, came down to the house next door to me and called Henderson out. Dad [Dick Adams] said Bob went for his gun and shot himself in the foot trying to draw his pistol, Henderson must have had a pistol also, but Bob's son beat him to the draw and shot him six times. Dad said Henderson turned around walked back in the house and fell dead in front of his wife and children. Dad said he could remember hearing the shots and his mother [Sarah Lydia Qualls Adams] putting her head down and saying "Oh Lord". Bob was her brother and she had raised Henderson. So either way she was going to lose. Bob told the law he had done the shooting to keep his son out of prison. I recon he spent 10 years in the pen. They told Bob's mother he was out west working and to this day Emily [Bob's niece] does not like to speak of it.

Cousin Kathy Kennedy [grand-daughter of Kitty Adams]response: I had heard that story about Bob and Henderson before via Mama [June Kennedy]. She told it much the way you did. However, she mentioned that the fight was over one man believing that the other man had stolen coal from the teacher's coal stove at the schoolhouse. Then, one thing led to the other. I remember that Mama said that incident put a strain between our grandparent's relationship. I suppose because it was Grandpa's son versus Grandma's brother. WoW!

Steve George response [step-son of Garnet Adams, aka. Aunt Duck]: Garnet has told this story many times to me also. She said she was present with her mother when Bob told Sarah that he was going to kill "Hen". Sarah was milking at the barn and Garnet was there. Garnet said the dispute was over Hen accusing Bob of stealing coal. She said Bob went to Hen's house, called him out and shot him when he came out the door. Garnet said that Bob's son was with Bob at the shooting.
