Mrs. John H. Chapman, pioneer resident of Sanilac County, passed away Sunday, March 31 [1940], at her home, one mile west of Shabonna, following an illness of several years.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Mizpah Mennonite Church. Rev. E. M. Gibson, assisted by J.A. Avery, officiated. Burial was in Moshier Cemetery near Hemans.
Alfretta Hurlburt was born in Ontario seventy-six years ago and came to Sanilac County when a small girl.
She was married to John H. Chapman on March 22, 1887. He died November 13, 1939.
Mrs. Chapman was a member of the Mizpah Mennonite Church.
She is survived by one son, Elmer Chapman, of Decker; four daughters, Mrs. Ernest Hyatt, of Snover, Mrs. Eugene McKee, of Hay Creek, Mrs. Altha Cooley, of Cass City, and Miss Alice, at home; eighteen grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Augusta Howard, of Pontiac; one brother, Elwood Hurlburt, of Hemans.
