Joshua Betterton was the son of William Betterton and mother unknown. William's father, also William, and all his family except the son, William and one brother perished in a massacre of settlers in Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania.

Joshua married Mary West, daughter of Owen and Elizabeth Martin West on February 26, 1810 in Pittslvania, Virginia. They migrated to Clinton County, Ohio and in 1813, Joshua purchased a homestead of 300 acres.

Joshua was a carpenter and millwright by trade. He built a large mill in Virginia and assisted in building two mills in Clinton County.

Mary's father, Owen West transfered 70 acres to Joshua on June 24, 1824. Owen had given all of his children land. Joshua served as Administrator for Owen West's estate disposal.

Joshua and Mary had thirteen children. The first three children were triplets.

The sons Quincy Nathan and Levi are identified on the West Family DNA Project but have not been located on later census data. They may have died at or shortly after birth.

Gravesite Details

Cemetery records indicate death date of December 5, 1834. Tombstone picture confirms October 5, 1834. Tombstone indicates birth year of 1772 but other records are consistent with 1771 date.
