On August 2, 1841, Jacob Schmitt, Nicolaus Frett and Nicolaus Adams were the first to arrive in what is now the village of Johnsburg. The St John the Baptist church and cemetery were built on the land of Jacob Schmitt which he had purchased 60 acres from the United States Government in 1841.
