Formerly of DeSoto, she passed away in the Legacy Assisted Living home in Xenia, Ohio.
Daughter of John & Julia (Garton) Cima. John was a coal miner, having joined his father in the mines by age 12. Soon after June was born the family moved to Madrid, Iowa in search of work, where she received her public education, graduating from high school as Salutatorian and was involved in many extracurricular activities. She lettered in marching band (trombone), orchestra (violin), and Glee Club. She was a charter member of the Quill & Scroll International Society of High School Journalists and she also debated.
She made a commitment to follow Jesus Christ while still a teenager. She enrolled in Anderson College, now Anderson University in Indiana. With her family able to provide limited financial support, she was awarded some scholarships and found work housekeeping, grading papers, and as a secretary in the college offices. Despite her heavy work load she found time to participate in many extracurricular activities and church functions. Her bio upon graduation shows she was involved for more years in more school activities than many of her classmates, and included her recognition as May Queen her Senior Year.
Six months after receiving her BS in Education she married to Carl Olson on December 17, 1944, and continued in her job with the Associated Retail Bakers of America in Chicago. In January 1946, they moved to Madrid, Iowa with a 6 week old daughter, and Carl traveled as a salesman. In June 1946, they moved to Carl's hometown of DeSoto, Missouri, where Carl joined his family in operating a baby chick hatchery. There they had four more daughters and spent most of their married life.
She was primarily a homemaker, she found time to help in the family business, volunteer in Girl Scouting, participate in the PTA, teach a Sunday school class, and actively participate in various roles in the Women of the Church of God in DeSoto, as well as with the youth in DeSoto and the State of Missouri. She held many roles in the Missouri Youth Camps at Camp Sharon on The Lake of the Ozarks for 23 years. She always took her children to Camp Sharon with her (4 of them when less than 10 weeks old) and was an active part of nearly every camp.
After her youngest daughter began school, June began an 18 year career as an elementary school teacher, mostly in the Festus R-6 District, and thus could help with the college financial support of 5 daughters. After retirement, she held offices in the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association.
Failing health prompted June & Carl to move to Ohio in December 2003 to live with their oldest daughter and son-in-law. June entered the nursing home in July 2004 when she needed more care.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, her children and their mates: Carol Lynne (James) Usher 0f Xenia, Ohio; Nancy (John) Howard of Camrose, AB, Canada; Sharon (Sam) Collins of Anderson, IN; Jeanne (Steve) Quam of Anderson, SC; Mona (Rod) Carroll of Kokomo, IN; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; 3 siblings: Norman (Phyllis) Cima of Menlo Park, CA; Mary (Walter) Miller of Anderson, IN; and Dru Bose of Indianapolis, IN; her sibling-in-laws: Blaine (Betty) Olson of DeSoto, MO and Geri (Robert) Dial of Plymouth, MI; 6 nephews, 4 nieces, and a host of friends.
Memorial services were held at Ledbetter Church of God, Xenia, OH; arranged by Herr-Riggs Funeral Home of Middletown, OH; and also at Dietrich Funeral Home in DeSoto, MO. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in DeSoto.
