Ivory Crandall, a native of Rhode Island, was a carpenter by trade, and a private in the war of 1812, Capts. Bentley & Hayden's Cos, NY Mil. His wife, Hopey Winslow, was born in New York state. In 1836, they removed from Monroe County, N.Y., to LaGrange Township, Indiana, where Mr. Crandall bought land. In Sept of that same year, he and Moses J. Hill laid out the town of Bloomfield, later known as Hill's Corners, and now known as Plato. Ivory and Hopey had 10 children together. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Grannis, in Jackson Township, Steuben County, Indiana, March 4, 1872.
