James Irvine was Colonel of the 90-day 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Civil War regiment from April to August, 1861, when it was disbanded; he then raised a company of Cavalry which was assigned to the 9th Ohio Cavalry in 1863 where he was made Captain and promoted to Major of the regiment.
