Vi Melin, 65, of Elbow Lake, died Sunday, August 21, 2011, at the Prairie Ridge Hospital in Elbow Lake.

Funeral services for Vi Melin will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 26, 2011, at United Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake with the Rev. Bob Toso officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Elbow Lake. Friends may call at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake on Thursday from 5-7 pm; visitation will resume at the church on Friday one hour prior to the service.

Vi was born August 28, 1945, in Wishek, North Dakota, the youngest of three children born to Gottlieb and Emily Schmierer. She attended school in Wishek and graduated in 1963. In 1966, Vi graduated from the Bismarck School of Nursing. She began her nursing career at the Wishek Hospital; she later worked in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Fargo, North Dakota.

On August 15, 1971, Vi was married to Rod Melin in Wishek. They made their home in Elbow Lake where Rod was a teacher in the Elbow Lake school district and Vi began nursing at the hospital in Elbow Lake. Throughout her career, Vi also worked at the Hoffman nursing home and the Barrett Care Center where she was Director of Nursing for 25 years. Vi retired in 2007.

For the past four years, Vi and Rod enjoyed spending their winters in Mission, Texas. Vi was extremely devoted to her family, attending every sporting event, play, or concert possible. Most recently her favorite pastime was watching her grandchildren grow up. She enjoyed going to the casino, fishing, and was a Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan. Vi was a member of the United Lutheran Church and the Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by Rod, her husband of 40 years, and three children and their families, Julie and her husband Steve Stobbs and their children Grace and Cole of Robbinsdale, Chelle and her husband Mark Dewey and their children Mitchell, Marshall and Miley of Fergus Falls, and Timothy and his wife Sara and their first child yet to be born of Maple Grove; and one sister, Irene Wentz and her husband Earl of Bismarck, North Dakota.

Vi was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Milton Schmierer.
