Micajah Madison Brooks was born near Macon, Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Virginia law school before arriving in Texas in 1879. After initially settling in Forney he moved to Greenville. He was married and had four children. Brooks served as a judge on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals 1899 - 1910. Brooks ran an unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign in 1906. Following his court service, he practiced law in Dallas and was instrumental in founding Southern Methodist University, which opened in 1915. Brooks drew up the school's charter, served as its attorney, and became the first president of its board of trustees.
