Harriet never married. Within her family she had what they called "the gift". It was passed from generation to generation and is still in the Poissot family till this day. Harriet did not like men around her and if she felt uncomfortable she would call snakes, she could part the clouds with an axe. Family members state that she would get in a boat and call snakes and they would surround the boat. She and her sister Laura Poissot Carter lived together in their later years.
