Sarah Ann Groves was the daughter of Sewell Groves and Ann Moran Groves, sister to William P. "Bill", Gilbert Sewell, Joseph Lawrence, Margaret "Maggie" Jane, Edward Jesse, George Francis, and Frederick Earl Groves. Her grandparents on her father's side were Joseph and Catherine Staley Groves.
