Drexel: The First Hundred Years:
Sewall Groves was the son of Sarah Ann Smith & William Thomas Groves. In 1868 he married Ann Moran in IL & they move to MO in 1872 from Perry County, IL. The family settled on a farm north of Merwin where their children were raised. On 15 Jun 1912, the tornado which took 14 lives & destroyed many homes, struck the Sewell Groves home. Sons Fred & Gib Groves were at home alone when the tornado hit. Their mother Ann was at the William's home caring for those who were ill. Their brother George, who lived just south of Drexel, had returned from the William's home and almost stopped to remain overnight but he could not reach his wife by telephone, so he went on home. After the storm was over, the bodies of Fred & Gib were found about 200 to 300 feet northeast of where the house once stood. Nothing remained of the home. Even the hedge row was taken up by roots eight to ten feet long. Sons Fred, Gilbert, Joseph Lawrence, and George Francis are buried in Sharon Cemetery.
