Mary Ann Slavin was in North Tarrytown NY, the first child of Bernard and Bridget. She was baptized at St. Teresa of Avila Church on the same day. John Haggerty and Ann Oates were sponsors. Mary Ann, as the first born daughter, was named for her mother’s mother Mary Quigley . Mary Ann attended North Tarrytown Schools as a child. By the 1880 census, she along with her sister Ellen and brother Tully were working in a local shoe factory.
Mary Ann married Andrew McElwain, the son of Andrew McElwain and Maria E. McCullen on November 18, 1885 at the old St. Teresa of Avila Church on De Peyster Street by Father Joseph. The witnesses were Mary Ann’s sister Ellen Slavin and Timothy Mullane . The McElwains celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1935.
The McElwains were the parents of seven children; three of whom died young. The McElwains raised their family in North Tarrytown. Mary died at home on December 1, 1938, a few weeks after a bad fall. Her grandson Francis McElwain had been killed in a car accident that October, a tragic accident that sadly mirrored the death of her son William in a motorcycle accident in 1918. This event was said to hasten her demise.
